Stretching the hip flexors is very common and works great when it is needed. Commonly, I see this being done wrong. Many times there is a lot of arching going on at the low back. When arching from the low back takes place during this stretch, then it is not as effective as it could be. Why? Because when you want to stretch something, you want it to be on stretch on both ends. When you arch from the low back, it slacks the muscle you are really trying to address. So, by keeping the ABS and glutes stiff during this helps prevent the low back from just ‘falling’ into an arched position and makes the stretch a bit more effective.
